Metals

Those elements which loses electrons to form positive ions are called metals.

For example: sodium, magnesium, calcium, iron etc.

 

Non-Metals

Are those elements which gain electrons to form negative ions.

For example:  chlorine, oxygen, carbon etc.

 

Metalloids

Elements which can gain electron as well as can lose electrons are known as metalloids.

For example: silicon.
